Mishap
Spreading Peace, Love & Harmonica
“Athens, Georgia's, Mishap has proven to be ill named. The group creates music that is the very antithesis of an unfortunate accident. Belying its name (which also evokes images of a 1980s hair-metal band), Mishap creates buoyant acoustic grooves. The lively, euphonious music this quintet produces is rife with vividly strummed guitars, pleasing vocal harmonies, and percolating harmonica. The group originated in 1993 at the State University of New York at Geneseo when Jim Cheney, Sean Schenker, and Jonathan Sherman (a.k.a. Johnny Diamond) entered a school talent competition equipped with two acoustic guitars and a bass. They won, and this provided the trio with the impetus to continue performing. The three players soon added Matty Russo on guitar and mandolin and started gigging as an acoustic quartet. In 1995, the band decided to relocate to Athens, where it would pursue its musical ambitions on a full-time basis. Soon afterward, the band began to work up a fuller sound with the assistance of drummer Frank Teremy (another SUNY Geneseo émigré). Performing whenever possible, Mishap gradually built up a fan base from scratch; with in two years, the group was filling the Georgia Theater. Its ebullient live shows replete with vigorous jams have earned the band headliner status and plenty of fan support up and down the East Coast. ” - Dean Budnick
